Nonetheless

from Wedding ep. by Chris & Elisa Marchand

/

about

An alternate version of the track by the same name from the Through the Backdoor album. This version (recorded especially for our wedding) is different in that it features double-tracked harmonica and Elisa on background vocals (along with a new recording of Chris on guitar and vocals.

Lyrically, Chris is grappling with a lot of the "hard sayings" of Jesus found in the Gospels and what it means to be an imperfect disciple. Musically, this is Chris' homage to traditional folk structures and styles.

lyrics

What you asked for wasn't easy
But you asked it nonetheless
To be perfect as the Father in holiness
But what you asked for it was simple
Though simple sure does play with my mind
You make a grown man come and bow before you as a child

And should I come in last if I'm running this race to win
If a servant is least of all then I'll be the last one in
For I know the gate of life is not very wide
So I'll keep my feet on this road and meet you at the other side

And with how many have I been unfaithful
when with one impure thought I walked by
So I'm going to the doctor to see if he can gouge out my eye
And how many have I murdered when with one hateful glance I glared
For without grace I know this guilt would be too much to bare

So I will go the extra mile and when I'm done you can wash my feet
Unashamed it's your name I'll proclaim
And even your body I'll eat
For if I am to have part with you
I must daily take up my cross
For your sake I will lose my life and not count is a loss

What you asked for wasn't easy
But you asked it nonetheless
To be perfect as the Father in holiness
But what you asked for it was simple
Though simple sure does play with my mind
You make a grown man come and bow before you as a child
